Tides affect on Cuckmere River

The tidal flow at the mouth of the Cuckmere river is fastest during the hour before and after high tide. So if high tide was at 11am the fastest movement of water at the river mouth will be about 10am onwards.

Another factor affecting the speed of the water flow is the height of the tide. The higher the figure in metres the bigger the volume of water going through the same size river mouth, resulting in stronger currents!

The tides can be useful in assisting you to paddle up or down stream, but if you catch the tides wrong and the current is against you, then you could be in for a hard paddle. In view of this it is best to check the tides before making a decision as to whether to paddle to the sea or not.
